Mary M. Case, university librarian and dean of libraries at University of Illinois at Chicago, began a one-year term as president of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) on September 28, 2016, during the Association's Fall 2016 Meeting in Washington, DC. Case succeeds Larry Alford, chief librarian at University of Toronto, as ARL president. Alford continues to serve as a member of both the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee as past president.
Also on September 28, the Association's membership ratified the Board's election of Mary Ann Mavrinac, vice provost and Andrew H. and Janet Dayton Neilly dean of River Campus Libraries at University of Rochester, as ARL vice president/president-elect.
Three new Board members were elected by the membership to serve three-year terms: Constantia Constantinou, dean of University Libraries, Stony Brook University; Diane Parr Walker, the Edward H. Arnold university librarian, University of Notre Dame; and Leslie Weir, university librarian, University of Ottawa.
Continuing elected members of the Board are: Susan Gibbons, university librarian and deputy provost for libraries and scholarly communication, Yale University; Lorraine Haricombe, vice provost and director of libraries, University of Texas at Austin; Bonnie MacEwan, dean of libraries, Auburn University; Steven Smith, dean of libraries, University of Tennessee, Knoxville; Ann Thornton, university librarian and vice provost, Columbia University; and John Wilkin, the Juanita J. and Robert E. Simpson dean of libraries and university librarian, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Also serving on the Board and Executive Committee are Vivian Lewis, university librarian, McMaster University, in her role as chair of the ARL Coordinating Committee, and Elliott Shore, executive director, Association of Research Libraries, as an ex officio member.
The Board of Directors is the governing body of the Association and represents the interests of ARL member libraries in directing the business of the Association, including establishing operating policies, budgets, and fiscal control; modifying the ARL mission and objectives; and representing the Association to the community.
