Reprints Desk' Senior Sales Engineer Chris Atwood to present to academic library users of ILLiad and Odyssey software applications at upcoming academic library conference -

Document delivery supplier Reprints Desk, Inc., a Research Solutions company, has announced that the company's Senior Sales Engineer Chris Atwood will deliver a presentation entitled 'Streamlining Content Acquisition and CONTU Compliance via ILLiad' to attending academic library professionals on March 18, 2015, at the ILLiad International Conference in Virginia Beach, VA. The Reprints Desk presentation will explore best practices for streamlining the acquisition of full-text journal articles via ILLiad, the library resource sharing management software from Atlas Systems Inc., while simultaneously clearing copyright to comply with CONTU fair use guidelines.

The presentation will also highlight the use of Odyssey, free software that enables library administrators to send and receive electronic documents to and from other Odyssey sites and OCLC ILLiad sites. Odyssey, available directly within ILLiad software and also as a standalone version, enables larger, lending libraries already using Odyssey to serve smaller libraries more efficiently by eliminating slower, more manual scanning and sending processes for article delivery. ILLiad is distributed exclusively by OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc.

CONTU is an acronym for the Commission on New Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works, a group that was formed in 1974 by The United States Congress with a directive to examine issues associated with copyrighted works for computers and computer-related works. In their final report in 1978 and pursuant to the Copyright Act of 1976, CONTU recommended that academic photocopying and lending of up to five or more copies of an article or articles within five years for any given periodical represented a substitute for a subscription to or purchase of such work.

Many academic libraries in the United States adhere to CONTU fair use guidelines today, clearing copyright royalties on the sixth copy of any article acquired from a specific periodical. Reprints Desk's presentation will explore how the company's document delivery platform Article Galaxy can save time, lower costs, and improve document quality related to the acquisition of full-text scholarly research papers and copyright royalty clearance when CONTU's Rule of Five has been exceeded.

Article Galaxy serves as a gateway for fast access to specially-priced scholarly articles from more than 40,000 journals, as well as book chapters from hundreds of thousands of titles. The discounts are comprised of publisher-negotiated copyright royalty rates as well as deep discounts on service fees for rapidly delivered high-quality, native PDFs. Article Galaxy facilitates price-by-article lookups, browsing through a growing list of participating publishers and publications.
