Professor Sir Venki Ramakrishnan, a Wellcome Trust Investigator, has been announced as the next President of the Royal Society. The Nobel Prize-winning structural biologist will take up the position in December 2015 when the current President, Sir Paul Nurse, steps down.
Professor Sir Venki Ramakrishnan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009 for his work in discovering the precise structure of the ribosome, the complex structures in our cells that use instructions in our genes to synthesise proteins. His research has continued to focus on these structures, studying the mechanisms of translation in both bacteria and higher organisms.
