Thieme partners with National Library of the Netherlands to secure long-term archiving of digital publications -

Medical and scientific publishing house Thieme is depositing the entire content of all 150 journals available on Thieme Connect to the International e-Depot of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB), the National Library of the Netherlands. Following successful collaborations with US providers CLOCKSS and PORTICO, Thieme now expands its long-term data archiving strategy to Europe.

The cooperation with the National Library of the Netherlands reflects Thieme's commitment to securing scientific knowledge for the future and making it available to researchers and students on a long-term basis. The initiative is retroactive: all articles that have been published online in Thieme journals will be deposited to the library's digital archive. From there, they can be restored to Thieme Connect in case of emergency. As a so-called 'dark archive', the Thieme data archive at the National Library of the Netherlands will not be accessible to the public, but will serve as contingency backup.

Since 2002, the National Library of the Netherlands have been adding approximately two million publications annually to their digital archives, including websites, e-books, and digital journals. To ensure long-term data safety and integrity, the National Library is continuously upgrading and developing the long-term archive. While Thieme is currently archiving its digital journals, the publishing house is considering a permanent external backup of its digital book content.

Thieme Connect currently provides access to digital content from 150 journals and approximately 2,000 books, including articles and books on medicine, chemistry, veterinary medicine, and health professions such as physiotherapy and nursing. The knowledge platform also contains videos, podcasts and audio files on several medical topics. Content overviews as well as abstracts of articles and chapters are available for free. Full-text versions of individual articles can be purchased for a fee. Private print journal subscribers can access the digital version of their subscribed journals at no extra charge. Customized title packages are available for libraries, research centers, hospitals, and corporations.
