The Temple University will host the inaugural P2L (Publishers Reporting to Libraries) Summit in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 9–10, 2016, bringing together 20–30 teams of university library and press directors to explore how they may better work together in supporting the mission of the university. The summit will delve into the experience of library-press partnerships and open up new ways of thinking about the publishing enterprise as a core function of the academy. Participants will work towards understanding best practices for on-campus collaborations in scholarly communications.
Modelled on the successful Academic Art Museum and Library Summit hosted by the University of Miami Libraries and Lowe Art Museum in December 2015, the P2L Summit will offer highly participatory programming designed to inspire expansive thinking. The teams will work in small groups in a series of working sessions to share experiences, discuss challenges, and begin developing a set of "better" practices—to be documented in a white paper—for building and strengthening effective library-press partnerships.
The invitation-only summit will be hosted by the Temple University Libraries and Press and jointly convened by the Association of American University Presses (AAUP), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI). The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded Temple University a $40,000 grant to support the summit.
Scott Waugh, executive vice chancellor and provost of the University of California, Los Angeles, will deliver a keynote to foreground the working sessions. Monica McCormick, program officer for Digital Scholarly Publishing at New York University, will facilitate the working sessions. Wolfram Horstmann, director of Göttingen State and University Library and chair of the Göttingen University Press Editorial Board, will wrap up the event as the closing plenary speaker. The executive directors of the AAUP, ARL, and CNI—Peter Berkery, Elliott Shore, and Clifford Lynch—will convene the summit.
The P2L Summit is being organised by a committee of library and press directors and representatives from the four sponsoring organisations.
