Patrick J. Flynn named Editor-in-Chief for IEEE Biometrics Compendium -

Patrick J. Flynn, the Duda Family Professor of Engineering, professor of computer science and engineering, and concurrent professor of electrical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, has been named editor-in-chief for the IEEE Biometrics Compendium, the first virtual journal published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Biometrics Council. Established in 2010 and published quarterly, the journal highlights specific areas of interest in biometrics - such as identification, verification, encryption, recognition, and medical diagnosis - while also providing commentary from experts in the field.

The role of editor is not a new one for Flynn. He is a past associate editor-in-chief of IEEE Transaction on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (TPAMI) and past associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE TPAMI, Pattern Recognition, and Pattern Recognition Letters.

His research interests include computer vision, biometrics, pattern recognition, computer graphics and scientific visualization, and mobile application development. As co-director of Notre Dame’s Computer Vision Research Laboratory, Flynn and his team continue to make far-reaching contributions to face and iris recognition technologies and novel biometrics. Their work has been supported by a variety of government and industrial sources, such as the National Science Foundation, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity.

A fellow of the IEEE and the International Association for Pattern Recognition, Flynn is a distinguished scientist of the Association for Computing Machinery and a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the American Society for Engineering Education, and the International Association for Identification.

Flynn was recently named an IEEE Computer Society 2016 Technical Achievement Award recipient. He has also received the Meritorious Service, Golden Core, and Certification of Appreciation awards from the IEEE Computer Society.
