CMAJ editors announce new vision protecting editorial independence -

The editors of Canada's major medical journal, CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal), recently announced a new vision they hope will chart a new beginning for the century-old publication. In an editorial published in the journal, the editors say that a new mission, vision and robust governance structure, and strong support from its association will allow the journal to grow and develop.

In early 2016, the journal underwent important changes and uncertainty, with the firing of the editor, disbanding of the Journal Oversight Committee and a detailed review by a task force charged with deciding the journal's future.

After in-depth consultations with Canadian and international readers, authors, reviewers, editorial advisory board members and other stakeholders for their views on the role of the journal, it was clear that a stronger CMAJ was desired.

The journal's new mission is "To champion knowledge that matters for the health of Canadians and the rest of the world" and its vision, "Best evidence. Best practice. Best health" represents CMAJ's role in helping physicians care for patients and informing health policy.

Editorial independence is protected and a new CMAJ Governance Council will strengthen the journal, ensuring that both the editorial and business objectives align with CMAJ's mission while protecting editorial independence; encouraging healthy communication between editorial and publishing staff and the owners; and evaluating the journal's performance against clear metrics.
