SAE International to publish new IAASS standard for commercial space travel and exploration -

SAE International has announced that it will publish a new standard developed by the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS).

With commercial space exploration a reality, the need for safety certification is crucial. To date, no such set of standards existed. IAASS-SSI-1700 Safety Standard: Commercial Human-Related Spaced Standard brings together more than 60 years of experience accumulated throughout government space programs. The requirements outlined in the document are intended to protect the flight personnel (i.e., crew and flight participants), the vehicle and relevant launcher or carrier, and any other interfacing system from spaceflight hazards.

IAASS is a non-profit organisation dedicated to furthering international cooperation and scientific advancement in the field of space systems safety. The Association exists to help shape and advance an international culture of space safety (technical, organizational and socio-political), which would contribute to make space missions, vehicles, stations, extraterrestrial habitats, equipment and payloads safer for the general public, ground personnel, crews and flight participants. The Association also pursues the safeguarding and sustainability of the on-orbit environment to allow unimpeded access to space by future generations.
