NISO Voting Members approve project to develop recommended practice for a compatible taxonomy, definitions, and recognition badging scheme -

The National Information Standard Organization (NISO) Voting Members have approved a project to develop a recommended practice pertaining to reproducibility in the computational and computing sciences. This work will examine existing taxonomies and badging schemes to define various levels of reproducibility and communicate these in the publishing process.

Stakeholders, including publishers and not-for-profit societies in the engineering and computing sciences fields, industry associations, and academic libraries are invited to participate in the working group that is now starting up.

According to Gerry Grenier, Senior Director, Content Management at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Inc. and a co-sponsor of the project proposal, publishers and researchers are placing greater emphasis on the practice of reproducibility as an essential ingredient of the scientific research process. As reproducibility is spreading in the scholarly publishing landscape, badging schemes and taxonomies are developing on an ad-hoc basis. This NISO effort is focusing on the computational and computing sciences, but it may also help to encourage support for a standardised approach for such indicators spanning a variety of disciplines.

Those interested in participating in the working group now being formed should contact NISO Associate Director of Programs, Nettie Lagace, at nlagace@niso.org. NISO is seeking participation in this working group by publishers, vendors, and the academic community.
