The author, Lalitha Kumari, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, India, emphasises that the development of a firm R&D foundation in the government and private sector in every domain of science and technology has led to a rise in research publications. But it is of great concern that these research findings, particularly those published in Indian journals, are underrepresented globally. To overcome this problem, the Internet can be used as a medium for propagating information. Further, free access can be given to users across the globe. Pointing out that STM journals are available online owing to government and private non-profit publishers, the article provides an overview of these efforts internationally while focusing specifically on Indian initiatives.
