Libraries evolve into information clearinghouses -

(nctimes.com): Libraries, long recognized as book lenders, are evolving along with changing reading habits and new technology to become information clearinghouses, offering services as diverse as free passes for museums, e-book loans, housing clinics and live performances. Libraries are also trying to provide a bulwark against the economic erosion of the recession. The San Diego County Library system, with branches in San Marcos, Vista, Encinitas, Poway, Fallbrook, Ramona and Valley Center in North County, offers housing clinics with free mortgage and legal counseling to homeowners facing foreclosure, and hosts an ongoing "job cafe" at its Encinitas branch.
