The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) and The Scholarly Kitchen, in collaboration with Frankfurter Buchmesse, will once again deliver two insightful sessions exploring the latest industry developments as well as a look at the current state of OA monograph publishing.
The first session features TSK Chefs discussing ‘What’s Hot and Cooking in Scholarly and Academic Publishing.’ The Chefs will specifically explore the question of whether the industry is indeed undergoing a ‘transformation,’ or finding new ways to uphold the status quo.
Panelists include: David Crotty, Executive Editor, The Scholarly Kitchen, and Editorial Director, Journals Policy for Oxford University Press; Angela Cochran, Associate Editor, The Scholarly Kitchen, Managing Director and Publisher at the American Society of Civil Engineers, and President of the Society for Scholarly Publishing; Todd Carpenter, Executive Director of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO); Robert Harington, Associate Executive Director, Publishing at the American Mathematical Society; Phill Jones, Owner, and Principal Consultant, Double L Digital; Roger Schonfeld, Director, Ithaka S+R’s Library and Scholarly Communication Program; and Monica Hoh, 2019 SSP Fellow, MSLIS Student, School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Adrian Stanley, Managing Director, Publishers, at Digital Science, and Past President of SSP, will moderate the second session, ‘Challenges and Opportunities in OA Monographs.’ Speakers will offer an up-to-the-minute overview of the current OA monograph landscape and the challenges and opportunities it provides, particularly around the existing infrastructure for books, which continues to lag behind that of its journal counterparts. The session will be of interest to anyone working in or with a scholarly books program as we transition to a more ‘open’ future.
Speakers and perspectives include: Andrew Joseph, Digital Publisher, Wits University Press on OA monographs and the balance of commercial concerns with the mission of the press; Kelley Squazzo, Director of Publisher Relations and Content Development, Project MUSE on the role of eBook aggregators in OA monograph publishing and promotion; Sara Grimme, Director of Strategic Accounts, Digital Science on the recent white paper ‘The State of Open Monographs’ and its findings; and Brian O’Leary, Executive Director, Book Industry Study Group on recommendations for best practices surrounding metadata and usage tracking.
This event is free to all Fair attendees on October 16, 2019, from 8:45 to 11:00 am and includes a complimentary breakfast.
