The Central Statistics Office (CSO) is leading a digital transformation project, referred to as the Linked Open Statistics (LOS) project. It forms part of a wider European Statistical System (ESS) project for digital communication, user analytics, and innovative products (DIGICOM). The LOS project aims to use Linked Open Data (LOD) to facilitate communication and dissemination of European statistical data.
The goal of the LOS project is to enhance publication and analysis of statistical data by transforming it to LOD. As LOD allows data from different sources to be connected and queried, it is expected that LOD will enable rich nuggets of information buried across the ESS to be brought to the surface. This transformation of data into LOD will help in generating new insights to address critical social, economic, and environmental challenges. There are many benefits to publishing EU statistical data as LOD. For instance, LOD will make it easier to discover datasets, along with specific details within them. Additionally, it will facilitate an EU-wide analysis of statistical data from member countries. Furthermore, the LOS project will provide the four European statistical institutes involved in the DIGICOM project--Bulgaria, France, Italy, and Ireland--with greater flexibility concerning publication of datasets. Besides, the project will help build capacity by training personnel in the technologies used for publication of datasets so they can be in a position to handle the conversion of their respective countries’ statistical data to Resource Description Framework, which is an accepted model for data interchange on the Web.
