The electric grid industry is following in the footsteps of the other industries by incorporating an ontology — the Smart Grid Ontology tool — into its business model. The ontology tool is a result of the collaboration organized by the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) and its Electric Grid Ontology Task Force. It is expected that the ontology tool would help standardize the language employed to discuss current and future smart grid technologies unambiguously.
Progress on smart grid interoperability standards and deployment is dependent on categorizing and defining utility information exchanges and the relationships between elements on the electric grid, correctly. Misunderstanding and ambiguity are, however, prevalent in the smart grid systems architecture. The SEPA Smart Grid Ontology directly addresses the misunderstanding and ambiguity within the smart grid systems architecture by providing a universal vocabulary and framework.
If the ontology tool is universally adopted, the resulting formal ontology(s) could reduce the frustrations and inefficiencies resulting from miscommunications. Utilities could also automate multi-system data analytics and optimization, reduce costs, and mitigate delays in the push for grid modernization by deploying the ontology tool.
To promote successful and widespread implementation, SEPA has invited utilities to download and use this new tool in their IT and OT testing environments. In addition, utilities can witness a live demonstration or visit the SEPA Smart Grid Ontology landing page for more details.
