Aries Systems Corporation, a leading technology workflow solutions supplier to the scholarly publishing community, has announced the upcoming release of a new Editorial Manager® API for repositories. The application will be developed as a ‘generic’ API, enabling flexible integration opportunities for independent repositories. Aries is among the first to create a universal API that is widely available for third parties to access and code to.
The repository API will be designed to allow any customer or repository vendor the ability to integrate with the EM system free of charge. The upcoming API will allow each repository provider to configure their repository profile while allowing custom configurations for specific publishers as needed. Journals will have a choice as to which repositories authors will be able to deposit files and submissions to, providing publishers with full control.
Through the API, Authors will simply select a repository item, which will be sent to the repository directly within the submission process without ever needing to leave Editorial Manager. If desired, an alternative workflow will easily allow Authors the ability to go directly to the repository’s submission user interface. Once items have been uploaded, links to the repository item will be generated for Authors as well as any Reviewers and Editors with proper system permissions. Each link will present different rights – an Author will receive an ‘edit’ link whereas Reviewers will receive a ‘view’ link. Notifications are then automatically sent within Editorial Manager informing the repository of decision milestones as the submission moves through the review process. This encourages Authors to send datasets to repositories, making it easier for researchers to gain access to that data.
Dryad, Figshare, Cadmore Media and Mendeley Data are among some of the repositories partnering with Aries to establish integrations with the API. The new repository API will become available with the release of EM/PM version 17.0 in Q1 2021.
