Innovations in Taxonomy Building Still Combine Human Expertise with Automation -

Taxonomy Boot Camp (TBC) took place in Washington, DC, at the same location and during the same week in early November as four other conferences—KM World, Text Analytics Forum, Enterprise Search and Discovery, and Office 365 Symposium. According to Joanne Claussen, the director of the Content Enrichment program for Risk at Thomson Reuters, the overarching theme of all the conferences revolved around the management of enterprise content assets.

The buzzwords at all the conferences this year were knowledge graph, artificial intelligence and analytics. The norm in the knowledge management (KM) solutions presented by both vendors and users combined human activity and sophisticated automation. For example, machine-learning systems that distributed content to hand-curated taxonomy categories. Rules-based systems in combination with machine learning were also common. In fact, the subtitle of TBC, “Bridging Human Thinking and Machine Learning,” was applicable to all the conferences. All the presentations were multi-disciplinary in nature with respect to the tools and solutions for managing and sharing organizational knowledge.

Artificial intelligence and cognitive computing applications were among the key topics for discussion across all the conferences. In addition, there was an emphasis on the need for human thought and creativity. However, there appears to be no clarity on how organizations working with humongous data are going to leverage human expertise to enhance, analyze and distribute information. Another recurring theme was the need for taxonomies and text analytics for analyzing the structure of data and where it is being used.

Other common topics included the increase in the importance of visualization tools; advances in chatbots for customer support; and the continually increasing volume of data of many different types. In addition, the focus of some of the attendees was on the need to manage these developments in a comprehensive manner.
