Ensuring that taxonomies grow holistically -

Taxonomies and the businesses they serve are constantly evolving and flourishing alongside each other. Similarly, users along with the processes they work with and the content they create and consume are ever evolving. Therefore, it is important to keep the entire vocabulary in mind when adding new terms or making changes to the existing terms. Only then can it be ensured that the taxonomy grows holistically. According to Jenni Doughty, a taxonomist at Enterprise Knowledge, this is a challenging task.

To ensure that taxonomy grows holistically when there are multiple taxonomies involved within a certain content type, every new term should be considered carefully. In addition, the term should be placed within the correct value list. This will reduce the occurrence of term overlap, particularly when the taxonomy and its governance plan are dynamic entities.

For example, when a person writes a new procedure on how to process a claim for a customer, it would be tagged as "Claims" from the Topic taxonomy. In addition, it would be tagged as "Procedure" from the Document Type taxonomy and as "Customer service" from the Function taxonomy. Finally, a term that is the best fit for the taxonomy would be chosen from the list of values that was created for the taxonomies. However, this method would work only if the taxonomy governance process affirms that the taxonomy value lists are mutually exclusive.
