The key to understanding big data is words. They are the basis for modeling, integrating, governing and querying in a data ecosystem. Therefore, organizations can use taxonomies—classification of words and their hierarchies, to express big data to their business users in the language or in the terms they will understand.
Furthermore, when taxonomies are used across the length and breadth of an organization, they create opportunities for the business to capitalize on big data’s underlying meaning, regardless of its form or the techniques used to access it. So much so, it would not be far from the truth to conclude that the future of data management is inexorably linked with taxonomies.
