SSP’s new introductory workshop, “Open Access: Understanding the Mission, the Models, and the Mindsets,” scheduled for July 21 -

The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) has announced a new introductory workshop, “Open Access: Understanding the Mission, the Models, and the Mindsets,” scheduled for July 21, 2021, from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm ET. Highly interactive, this workshop will be of interest to both early-career professionals as well as those more experienced in scholarly communications who want to enhance their understanding of the latest developments in open access publishing and their contexts in the wider academic ecosystem.

As the movement away from the subscription model toward open access progresses, the concept of OA has grown to encompass a wide variety of publishing and business models. Over the last couple of years, SSP has seen great interest in content introducing open access and untangling some of its complexities, addressing various models and challenges. Led by Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, (Coordinator for Information Literacy Services and Instruction, and professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), attendees of this introductory workshop will learn about the history and evolution of open access, from the Budapest Open Access Initiative to Plan S, and explore the evolution from the original green and gold OA models to the latest transformative agreements and other business models.

Specifically, the workshop will cover: a brief history of open access and its position in the broader context of Open Science; different types of open access and how these definitions are contested Affordances and limitations of open access; perspectives of different stakeholders; approaches to funding models: transformative agreements, pure publish agreements, memberships, subventions, and micro-payments; and ways that open access may develop in the future.

Individual registration discounts are available for SSP, AUPresses, NASIG, NISO, LPC, and ACSE members, as well as residents of low/middle-income countries (as classified by World Bank). Sponsorship opportunities are available for the workshop.
