The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Editorial Panel ensures CPT codes keep pace with the innovation in digital medicine. However, the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Digital Medicine Payment Advisory Group (DMPAG) has identified a need for a taxonomy to manage the wide range of CPT codes in medicine. Consequently, the Digital Medicine Taxonomy was approved at the October 2020 CPT Editorial Panel meeting. It will be published in the CPT 2022 codebook.
The Digital Medicine Taxonomy offers an organized, single source that visually communicates all the CPT codes corresponding to digital medicine and how it is distinct or overlaps. The framework of the Digital Medicine Taxonomy is designed to evolve with emerging digital medicine technologies. As new technologies are integrated into clinical practice, the taxonomy will reflect the changes to the existing codes or incorporate the new CPT codes created for groundbreaking innovations. Besides, the taxonomy format ensures clarity on how each new service distinctly fits into the digital medicine landscape.
The taxonomy will be helpful to coders and administrators developing programs that incorporate digital medicine and to physicians and health care professionals using the technology to treat their patients. A user might also consult the Digital Medicine Taxonomy, which will be released this August, to see what is new in digital medicine.
