Wiley unveils new OA journal: Public Health Challenges -

Wiley, a global leader in research and education, has announced the launch of its newest open access journal, Public Health Challenges. The journal aims to publish original research, reviews, and perspectives that represent the full spectrum of global public health research, policy and practice.

The COVID-19 pandemic has cast a spotlight on the vital importance of public health measures, not just in the immediate prevention and management of infectious disease outbreaks, but also in promoting the long-term welfare of populations when their prospects are closely correlated with preventable co-morbidities. In addition, the pandemic underscored health inequalities and the need to address mental health alongside physical health in a holistic manner. This pandemic will have profound implications for the way that public health is conceived and practiced in the future, and Public Health Challenges will lead the way in addressing this shift.

Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno has been named the journal’s first Editor-in-Chief and will lead a team of international scientists, physicians and health experts. Dr. Lucero-Prisno is a global health scientist who has done extensive work particularly in Africa and Asia. He is affiliated with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he teaches Global Health Policy. He is also affiliated with Harvard University where he focuses on surgical systems strengthening research.

Public Health Challenges spans three core areas: health improvement, health protection, and healthcare. As a global platform for high impact research on current public health challenges, the journal aims to stimulate global debate and discussion and influence public health policy and practice. The journal is positioned to set the global agenda for research to advance the science and understanding of major health issues worldwide, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. As a fully open access journal, Public Health Challenges also embraces wider open research principles. Authors are strongly encouraged to share the data from their research, as a commitment to reproducibility, and opt for transparent peer review to put referees’ reports and their responses in the public domain. Open recognition is also promoted for authors and reviewers through ORCID, the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) and Publons.
