Developing Pandemic Data Standards to Improve Data Sharing -

Exchanging data across health systems in Australia is challenging because of the lack of uniform data standards. Furthermore, health regions and institutions developed standards independently, especially for novel pathogens during the pandemic. This exacerbated the challenge. Therefore, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia's national science agency, suggested developing national pandemic data standards. They also made other recommendations.

CSIRO recommended improving Australia’s capabilities to link health data with non-health data, including geo-referenced socio-economic, intervention compliance, movement, and environmental data.

The CSIRO recommended designing and integrating smart analytics to share and analyze sensitive data nationally. According to Australia's national science agency, analyzing such data alongside other health data could provide continuous real-time insights to inform pandemic responses securely.

According to the CSIRO, having standards that support data collection, terminology, storage, and sharing processes ensures the health system's capability to share data between institutions and jurisdictions. Besides, these standards would help inform pandemic response strategies.
