A Taxonomy on Value-Based Healthcare -

Value-based healthcare (VBHC) has evolved significantly since its conception, and the use of language and terms related to VBHC has evolved. However, there is significant diversity in the usage of these terms and the underlying connotations they convey. This multiplicity makes engaging with diverse stakeholders challenging. The taxonomy initiative is the first step towards a common language. It aims to improve the deliberation on VBHC by ensuring a common understanding of associated terms and using them consistently across different stakeholder groups.

The taxonomy includes terms commonly used in VBHC, either well-defined or poorly defined in the literature, and/or have multiple definitions. An Adapted Delphi methodology was employed in collaboration with the Partners of the Alliance, their members, Affiliated Organizations, and other experts to develop and refine descriptions for the latter.

Overall, this VBHC Taxonomy initiative is more than just a starting point. It represents a milestone towards creating a common language and goal: transforming to more value-based healthcare. For the Alliance, this has sparked a lively discussion on its role and the opportunity to participate in this transformation. Furthermore, the Alliance intends to collaborate with various stakeholders in the future and move towards the vision of a Europe where health systems are value-based, sustainable, and people-centered.
