Taxonomy Is Indispensable For Contingent Workforce Program Success -

The value of constructing a common vocabulary across all contingent workforce (CW) program stakeholders and customers cannot be overstated. CW programs operate under the general assumption that all stakeholders speak the same language. The reality is vastly different. Common contingent workforce terms have multiple interpretations.

Unfortunately, miscommunications arising from lacking a common vocabulary often go quietly undetected. Consequently, programs need help to create accurate, timely visibility and highlight a program’s progress and success.

Regardless of the stage of a CW program, a best practice is to build, define, broadcast, and enforce a CW program taxonomy reflective of the program’s unique language. Furthermore, CW programs will benefit significantly from providing program taxonomy guidelines to vendors, leadership, and managers. A second critical best practice is to align all CW program tools and reporting fields to the program’s taxonomy. This will save valuable time while increasing the user experience. In addition, this alignment with the program taxonomy will offer easy searchability, better downstream and comparative data analytics, minimized misclassification, more reliable data, and better decision-making.

A defined CW business language will reduce discrepancies, misclassification, and data errors and improve the CW program's overall value, growth, and success. While achieving a common language takes time, the benefits far outweigh the effort and costs of making this happen.
