Renowned biomedical informatics and data analytics expert, Dr. Atul Butte, has been appointed to the editorial board of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). JAMA made the announcement on April 4, 2023, stating that Dr. Butte will be joining 16 leaders in medicine to provide ongoing advice and guidance on strategic direction for the publication.
Dr. Butte, who is the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg Distinguished Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), is a recognized international leader in artificial intelligence, biomedical informatics, and data analytics for healthcare. He is also the inaugural Director of the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute at UCSF and the Chief Data Scientist for the University of California Health System.
In a statement, Dr. Butte expressed his excitement for being an active contributor to the JAMA Editorial Board, emphasizing that the publication has recently taken the lead on many topical issues facing medicine, including data sharing, public access, and chatbots. He believes that JAMA will continue to reinforce its leadership in these areas, and he is eager to help.
Dr. Butte’s appointment will bring decades of experience in data analytics for healthcare to JAMA. He has authored over 300 publications, been funded by the National Institutes of Health for 25 years, and holds 24 patents. In 2013, he was recognized by the Obama Administration as a White House Champion of Change in Open Science for promoting science through publicly available data, and in 2015, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine.
JAMA’s Editor in Chief, Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, Ph.D., M.D., M.A.S., believes that Dr. Butte’s expertise and strategic thinking will be invaluable as AI and other data analytic tools continue to transform the practice of medicine and the conduct of science.
