Worcester Polytechnic Institute and De Gruyter launch the integrated global STEM publishing and education initiative -

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and De Gruyter are joining forces to launch The Integrated Global STEM Publishing and Education Initiative, a groundbreaking project aimed at advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and research on a global scale. With a focus on addressing critical issues and seizing opportunities in the Global South, the initiative will provide a platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and resource sharing among scientists, policy researchers, humanists, engineers, and STEM educators worldwide.

Recognizing the importance of STEM education and research in the region, African leaders, the World Bank, and the United Nations have identified it as a top priority. The Integrated Global STEM Initiative seeks to foster convergence and generate solutions that tackle urgent global challenges across various life-supporting fields. By promoting peer-to-peer scientific exchange and collaboration, the initiative aims to facilitate innovative approaches and advancements in areas such as basic infrastructure, engineering, environment, food production, green chemistry, health, manufacturing visibility and accessibility, smart technology, sustainable development, and energy, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Under the leadership of Professor Robert Krueger, Director of WPI’s Institute of Science and Technology for Development (InSTeD), and Head of the Social Science and Policy Studies Department, along with Wole Soboyejo, Senior Vice President and Provost of WPI, the initiative will bring together contributors from academic and corporate institutions worldwide. The integration of diverse perspectives and local scientific approaches will foster a comprehensive understanding of global challenges and facilitate the development of impactful solutions.

The Integrated Global STEM Initiative will encompass a new journal, a book series, and virtual and in-person educational events, providing a dynamic platform for knowledge dissemination, collaboration, and action. The first two titles to be published this fall are "Smart Villages" and "Science, Engineering, and Sustainable Development."

The Integrated Global STEM Publishing and Education Initiative represents a significant step forward in promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and leveraging STEM for the benefit of societies worldwide. By fostering a global network of expertise, this initiative will contribute to solving complex challenges and advancing sustainable development on a global scale.
