Taylor & Francis celebrates milestone of 1,500 open access books with technology and sustainable development -

Taylor & Francis, a prominent publisher in the academic industry, has reached a significant milestone by publishing its 1,500th open access (OA) book. Titled "Technology and Sustainable Development: The Promise and Pitfalls of Techno-Solutionism," the book highlights the crucial role of open access in disseminating relevant research beyond the confines of academia.

"Technology and Sustainable Development" tackles the practical challenges that governments and societies face today, focusing on the potential of technology to both solve and exacerbate pressing global issues such as gender inequality, the climate crisis, mistreatment of minorities, and the unequal distribution of power. Edited by Henrik Skaug Sætra, the book brings together a range of experts to explore the implications of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, social media, and big data. It also delves into the need for greater social and political control over these developments.

James Watson, Open Access Books Lead at Taylor & Francis, emphasized the significance of the 1,500th OA book, which centers on human-centered science. He highlighted the importance of open access publishing in providing access to valuable resources not only for researchers but also for policymakers, politicians, and individuals striving to address the social, economic, and environmental challenges of our societies in the face of unprecedented technological change.

In 2023, Taylor & Francis celebrates a decade of open access book publishing. With a portfolio comprising over 1,500 fully OA titles and numerous open chapters, the publisher has established itself as a leader in open access book publishing. Its OA books program enables authors and their funders to publish single- or co-authored books, edited collections, and individual chapters under open access terms. Upon publication, the OA content is made freely available in digital format, allowing readers to access and download the content under a Creative Commons license.

Readers can access "Technology and Sustainable Development" for free on Taylor & Francis eBooks. The open access funding support for the book was provided by Østfold University College, emphasizing the collaborative efforts to make valuable research accessible to a wider audience.
