IOP Publishing (IOPP) has announced the launch of a new open access journal, Environmental Research: Food Systems, aimed at addressing the critical need for sustainable food solutions on a global scale. The journal, aligned with the United Nations' Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), serves as an interdisciplinary platform for researchers dedicated to achieving sustainable food security worldwide.
Scientific advancements play a pivotal role in transforming the global food system. An efficient and effective food supply is essential for making progress on all 17 SDGs, ranging from poverty and hunger eradication to reducing emissions of climate-altering gases. Recent statistics from market insights provider The Lens reveal that research outputs related to food systems have increased by over 200% in the last decade, with citations more than doubling.
Nathan Mueller, Assistant Professor at Colorado State University and newly appointed Editor in Chief of Environmental Research: Food Systems, emphasized the importance of environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable food systems for the well-being of both people and the planet. In the face of climate change, population growth, and widespread food insecurity, there is an urgent need for innovative, transdisciplinary food systems research. Mueller expressed his vision for the journal, stating, "From production to consumption and local to global, Environmental Research: Food Systems is a home for rigorous, open access science that can promote innovation, inform policy and practice, and foster transformative change for a sustainable and secure future."
Dr. Tim Smith, Head of Portfolio Development at IOP Publishing, highlighted the pivotal role of science in addressing the challenges faced by the global food system. He explained that the launch of Environmental Research: Food Systems aims to provide an open access research platform dedicated to examining future risks, security, and adaptation of food systems worldwide. The need for sustainable food solutions has never been more pressing.
To encourage scholarly contributions to the journal, IOP Publishing will waive all article publication charges for submissions made before 2025. The journal also promotes transparency and reproducibility by encouraging authors to share data and code when appropriate, benefiting the wider research community. Authors have the option to submit their papers for double anonymous and transparent peer review.
Environmental Research: Food Systems is the latest addition to IOPP's expanding Environmental Research Series, which now comprises eight open access journals. By expanding its portfolio in the field of environmental research, IOP Publishing aims to support and drive scientific innovation to achieve sustainable global food solutions.
