In a landmark development for open science, the DEAL Consortium, representing German research institutions, and Elsevier, a global leader in scientific information and data analytics, have officially unveiled a groundbreaking open access agreement set to revolutionize the accessibility of German research worldwide. The historic five-year agreement, signed on September 1, 2023, marks a significant step towards fostering open access in Germany while ensuring affordability and sustainability.
The agreement, a result of extensive collaboration and shared vision, empowers researchers from participating German institutions to publish their work with immediate open access in Elsevier's prestigious collection of scientific journals, which includes renowned brands like Cell Press and The Lancet. It also aligns with DEAL's core objectives of affordability and sustainability.
Under the terms of this transformative agreement, authors affiliated with participating institutions will have the opportunity to publish their research articles in Elsevier journals with immediate open access. This is facilitated by a per-article fee, which will be covered by their institution. This initiative will enable global access to and utilization of their research findings. Additionally, institutions will benefit from discounted list prices for their researchers' publications in fully open access Elsevier journals. Furthermore, participating institutions will gain reading access to virtually the entire catalog of Elsevier journals hosted on ScienceDirect, the world's largest platform dedicated to peer-reviewed primary scientific and medical research.
The transformative agreement has been meticulously structured to offer exceptional value to the German research community, and institutions will soon be invited to participate, heralding the effective implementation of the agreement.
As the DEAL Consortium and Elsevier pave the way for open access in Germany, this transformative agreement promises to reshape the landscape of scientific publishing, making valuable research findings accessible to the global scientific community.
