IOP Publishing showcases Innovations in Peer Review during Peer Review Week 2023 -

IOP Publishing, a leading academic publisher, has been honored with the prestigious 2023 Association of Learned and Professional Society Publisher's (ALPSP) Impact Award for its pioneering advancements in peer review. In celebration of Peer Review Week 2023, the publisher is hosting two free webinars to showcase their commitment to enhancing the peer review process.

Peer review plays a vital role in ensuring the quality and integrity of scholarly research. IOP Publishing, recognizing its significance, has made significant strides in improving this crucial aspect of the scientific publishing landscape. Their dedication to providing a reliable and constructive peer review process has earned them the coveted ALPSP Impact Award.

One of the notable innovations by IOP Publishing is the introduction of double-anonymous and transparent peer review, designed to enhance the fairness and transparency of the review process. This approach ensures that reviewers remain anonymous to authors while maintaining transparency in the peer review process. This innovation has been widely lauded for its role in bolstering trust within the scholarly community.

Furthermore, IOP Publishing has extended its co-review policy to its entire portfolio of owned journals. This inclusive approach ensures that all researchers, regardless of their career stage, receive recognition for their contributions to the peer review process. Co-reviewing not only fosters collaboration but also promotes equal accountability, supporting both senior and early career researchers in their scholarly endeavors.

In collaboration with Morressier, IOP Publishing is also developing a state-of-the-art submission and peer review system. This joint effort aims to streamline the publication process and provide authors, reviewers, and editors with an efficient and user-friendly platform.

To shed light on these innovative initiatives and their impact on the research community, IOP Publishing is hosting two webinars during Peer Review Week 2023: Webinar 1: "Addressing Reviewer Bugbears with Innovations in Peer Review," scheduled for September 27, 2023 from 12:30 p.m. BST; and Webinar 2: "Co-review: Supporting Equal Recognition," scheduled for September 27, 2023, from 12:30 p.m. BST.

The webinar, Addressing Reviewer Bugbears with Innovations in Peer Review, will feature a panel of experts who will discuss the innovations needed to enhance the peer review process. The session will also explore the role of artificial intelligence in protecting the scholarly record. The distinguished panel includes: Chair: Tim Gillett, Editor, Research Information Magazine; Kim Eggleton, Head of Research Integrity and Peer Review at IOP Publishing; Michelle North, Researcher and Reviewer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa; and Barry Prendergast, Design Operations Manager at Morressier.

Webinar 2: "Co-review: Supporting Equal Recognition," will help attendees learn about IOP Publishing's co-review functionality and how it supports researchers at various career stages. Co-reviewing encourages collaboration and ensures equal recognition for all reviewers. The webinar will include insights from: Laura Feetham-Walker, Peer Review Engagement Manager, IOP Publishing; and Manuel Glöckler, PhD student at the University of Tuebingen.

IOP Publishing's commitment to improving peer review underscores the importance of maintaining the highest standards in scientific research and publishing. As they continue to innovate and collaborate with experts in the field, the future of peer review looks promising, fostering trust and transparency in the world of academia.
