Global research publisher Springer Nature Group has achieved a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainability by having its science-based emissions reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The announcement is part of the company's ongoing efforts to mitigate its environmental impact and work towards a net-zero future.
The newly verified targets, outlined in a supplement to Springer Nature Group's 2022 Sustainable Business report, set ambitious goals for emissions reductions across various scopes. By 2032, the company aims to achieve a remarkable 54.6% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 32.5% reduction in scope 3 emissions. Looking further ahead, the ultimate goal is to reach a 90% reduction across all scopes by 2040, aligning with their commitment to becoming carbon-neutral by that year.
Springer Nature Group is actively taking steps to achieve these targets, including transitioning towards digital content delivery, implementing changes in travel policies, and collaborating with suppliers to align with common sustainability goals.
The Group has already made substantial progress in reducing its scope 1 and 2 emissions, achieving carbon neutrality for its offices, warehouses, fleet, and flights since 2020, primarily through the purchase of high-quality carbon offsets. By committing to The Climate Pledge in 2021, Springer Nature Group became the first publisher to pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, further solidifying its dedication to combating climate change.
Springer Nature Group's commitment to science-based targets and sustainability reflects its role as a trusted research publisher, disseminating critical research to address climate change and environmental challenges effectively. This validation by SBTi underscores the company's dedication to reducing its own carbon emissions and leading by example in the global pursuit of a more sustainable future.
