German researchers are poised to reap the benefits of expanded access and impact for their scholarly work as they join their European counterparts in benefiting from Taylor & Francis' open access (OA) initiatives. In a significant development, a German library negotiation team operating under the aegis of Forum 13+ and Taylor & Francis has unveiled a transformative three-year "read & publish" agreement, scheduled to commence in 2024. This landmark agreement will grant researchers continued access to Taylor & Francis journals and offer them the option to publish their research as open access in over 2,000 Open Select (hybrid) titles.
Among these titles are journals published under the prestigious Routledge imprint, renowned for its vast portfolio in Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). It is anticipated that over 60% of the articles published open access through this agreement will pertain to HSS subjects, further enriching the scholarly landscape in these fields.
This agreement, meticulously structured, will facilitate the publication of all new articles with a corresponding author affiliated with participating institutions as open access in hybrid Taylor & Francis journals.
In response to this promising development, German higher education and research institutions have been invited to join a consortium, with nearly a hundred institutions expressing their intent to participate during a consultation period over the summer. The establishment and management of this consortium will be overseen by ZBW – Information Centre for Economics, a research-focused information infrastructure for economics and a member of the German Leibniz Association.
This transformative agreement with Forum 13+ follows a recent report, 'Accelerating Open Access in the UK,' which delves into the first two years of Taylor & Francis' OA partnership with the Jisc consortium and how it has enhanced the global influence of research from UK institutions, notably in the Arts & Humanities. Taylor & Francis anticipates that this new agreement with Forum 13+ will similarly catalyze open research in Germany, fostering a robust culture of open access publication and making research accessible to a broader global audience.
