The Company of Biologists has announced the recent inclusion of an additional 102 institutions into its Read & Publish Open Access (OA) initiative, marking a substantial stride in global participation since January 2023.
With the latest addition, the initiative now encompasses over 700 institutions across 42 countries. These additions have been facilitated through agreements with thirteen library consortia, including new collaborations with IISER, JULAC, and ZB Med – Information Centre for Life Sciences. The initiative's momentum further accelerated with the renewal and extension of the agreement with Electronic Information for Libraries (EIFL).
The success of the Read & Publish initiative has been instrumental in propelling a significant increase in OA research content within the Company of Biologists' hybrid journals – Development, Journal of Cell Science, and Journal of Experimental Biology. These three were the first worldwide to attain Transformative Journal status as recognized by Plan S.
Moreover, the institution notes that libraries are increasingly opting for the 5-journal package, integrating their Read & Publish agreements to include the institution’s fully OA journals – Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open.
The Company of Biologists’ Read & Publish initiative has not only demonstrated its expanding reach and global influence but has also significantly contributed to promoting accessibility and inclusivity in scientific publishing, enabling researchers worldwide to share their work in a cost-neutral and open manner.
