The Biochemical Society, along with its trading arm Portland Press Ltd, has announced an innovative Subscribe to Open (S2O) model for five of its esteemed research and review journals. This move exemplifies the Society's ongoing dedication to providing accessible research while upholding the highest standards of quality.
S2O represents a pioneering licensing model that aims to expand the Society's capacity to deliver open access (OA) in a fair and inclusive manner. Utilizing established channels and existing library resources, the initiative, set to launch in 2025, will complement the Society's existing OA routes – Read & Publish, Article Publishing Charge (APC), and Green OA. The goal is to ensure compliance with an OA route for all papers published across the Society's journal portfolio.
For over a century, Biochemical Society journals have maintained transactional relationships with libraries. S2O seeks to preserve these valuable partnerships with a focus on: Expanding global accessibility and impact of bioscience research; Eliminating barriers related to publication costs, promoting fee-free participation in OA publishing for all authors; Fostering inclusivity, irrespective of the geographic locations of authors and readers; and Aligning with the broader vision of open science supported by funders, institutions, and regulators.
Actively participating in the S2O Community of Practice, the Biochemical Society collaborates with librarians, publishers, and funders to establish S2O as a sustainable path to OA.
