In a collaboration between Taylor & Francis (T&F) and the National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME), the push for open access in the field of Education has yielded astonishing results. The NCME Applications of Educational Measurement and Assessment series has experienced a six-fold increase in readership within the first year of this transformative partnership.
The series, accessible here, serves as a definitive resource encompassing research, theory, and applied insights in educational measurement, assessment, testing, and psychometrics. Covering an array of critical topics such as validation, fairness, accountability, technology, natural language processing, and beyond, the series is a cornerstone for scholars, academic faculty, graduate students, and test development professionals.
Since the initiation of the collaboration in 2011, ten edited volumes have been published, and the series is poised to stay abreast of key advancements in the educational measurement field. A pivotal moment came in 2022 when NCME committed to providing open-access funding for all books in the series, making each title available for full reading at no cost to the reader.
Impressive Impact and Reach:
One standout volume within the series, "Classroom Assessment and Educational Measurement," edited by Susan M. Brookhart and James H. McMillan, saw a remarkable surge in usage from 2,329 views in 2021 to 9,989 views and downloads in 2022. Impressively, the book has already surpassed 13,000 views in the current year and received over nine times the average number of citations for publications in the same field, according to Dimensions data.
The impact extends globally, with the average number of countries accessing each series title increasing by more than 200 percent from 2021 to 2022, reaching 21 countries. In the United States alone, average usage surged over 60% in 2022 compared to the previous year. Moreover, the average number of institutions accessing the content more than doubled per title from 2021 to 2022.
Open Access Advancements and Achievements:
Authors and their funders can now publish open-access single- or co-authored books, edited collections, and individual chapters through the Taylor & Francis OA books program. Upon publication, open-access content is made available in digital format for free under a Creative Commons license.
Taylor & Francis has made significant strides in open books, reaching a milestone of 1,500 open access books with the publication of "Technology and Sustainable Development: The Promise and Pitfalls of Techno-Solutionism" earlier this year. Additionally, Education stands as the largest publishing list for Advanced Learning, T&F's book division, with a growing global presence to provide a broader range and depth of knowledge for its customers.
