Collaborating for change: DEI initiatives across the scholarly publishing industry -

In a steadfast commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the scholarly publishing landscape, AIP Publishing has taken significant strides by actively engaging in collaborative initiatives with publishers across the industry. The company's participation in key endeavors, including the RSC’s Joint Commitment for Action on Inclusion and Diversity in Publishing and the Coalition for Diversity and Inclusion in Scholarly Communications (C4DISC), exemplifies its dedication to promoting a more diverse and inclusive scientific publishing community.

AIP Publishing's involvement in the RSC’s Joint Commitment, which commenced in July 2021, has played a pivotal role in shaping the publisher's DEI initiatives. The Joint Commitment, launched in 2020, has focused extensively on addressing the critical issue of demographic data collection. AIP Publishing actively participated in the Diversity Data Collection Questions subgroup, contributing to discussions and feedback sessions aimed at refining the format of questions and responses. Notably, the collaboration extended to working with technology partners, including EJ Press, the vendor for AIP Publishing’s submission platform, ensuring that DEI considerations are shared priorities across the industry.

The Joint Commitment has provided a unique platform for publishers to collaborate and share insights. Triennial meetings and regular subgroup calls have facilitated knowledge exchange, allowing participants to showcase successes, seek guidance, and provide constructive feedback. This collaborative approach is particularly beneficial for smaller publishers, offering essential resources and minimum standards to initiate and maintain effective DEI efforts.

Furthermore, AIP Publishing is actively engaged in broader initiatives, including participation in C4DISC, being a signatory to the UN Sustainable Development Goals SDG Publishers Compact, and membership in the Physics and Astronomy SEA Change Committee (P/A SEA Change). The company has also played a role in The National Laboratories Name Change Initiative for Published Research Outputs. These initiatives serve as forums for publishers to exchange insights, ultimately contributing to the overarching goal of creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive scholarly publishing landscape.

AIP Publishing remains steadfast in its commitment to DEI initiatives and acknowledges the importance of collaborative efforts in driving positive change. By aligning with industry best practices and sharing learnings across organizations, both large and small publishers can collectively propel the scientific community toward a more inclusive future.
