Frontiers charts bold course towards open access dominance with strategic reorganization and resizing -

In a strategic move, Frontiers unveils a transformative reorganization and resizing initiative to propel open access as the default model for science publishing. The reshaping of the organization aims to enhance quality, agility, and financial resilience, ushering in a new era for the global scientific community.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped the landscape of scientific publishing, prompting Frontiers to adapt to emerging trends: A surge in article submissions during lockdown highlighted the scientific community's rapid response to global crises; Open access emerged as the preferred choice, reflecting the need for immediate knowledge dissemination; and Increased submissions to Frontiers' Research Topics demonstrated a desire for interdisciplinary collaboration free from traditional journal constraints.

However, the pandemic also brought challenges, including a rise in fraudulent manuscripts across the industry. In response, Frontiers implemented rigorous audits, research integrity controls, and AI-powered quality checks, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining high standards.

In 2023, Frontiers initiated a comprehensive reorganization, forming researcher-centric, technology-empowered teams to better serve its 2,000 academic communities. The organization optimized its operational model and management framework, ensuring adaptability to market shifts.

To further enhance efficiency, Frontiers is proposing a reduction of approximately 600 roles across 23 countries, making the organization more agile and financially resilient.

Despite these changes, Frontiers remains committed to supporting academic communities through inclusive programs, editor and reviewer recognition, advocacy for open science, and initiatives for the next generation.

Frontiers is positioning itself for the future, anticipating a shift in authors' preferences toward open access. The organization recognizes the potential acceleration in scientific output through the integration of AI.
