PLOS (Public Library of Science) reaffirms its dedication to transparency and open-access publishing with the release of its annual reporting through the Plan S Price & Service Transparency Framework. The framework offers insight into how publication fees are utilized to support journal activities and operational costs, allowing the academic community to better understand the value they receive.
Having participated in the framework since its pilot phase in 2020, PLOS remains committed to transparency by making all reporting openly available through its blog. The latest update, covering the year 2022, highlights key allocations of Article Processing Charges (APCs) across various categories, shedding light on the distribution of resources within the organization.
Notably, this year's reporting includes new journals such as PLOS Climate, PLOS Digital Health, PLOS Global Public Health, PLOS Sustainability and Transformation, and PLOS Water, reflecting the organization's ongoing expansion and diversification efforts.
In response to evolving editorial structures and services, PLOS has adjusted its APC allocations accordingly. Particularly, a greater percentage of APCs is now dedicated to "Journal Community Development," underscoring the importance of activities such as editorial board and scope development, especially for newly launched journals.
Moreover, PLOS emphasizes its commitment to expanding opportunities for open-access publishing beyond the traditional APC model. The organization offers institutional partnership models that can substantially reduce or eliminate publication fees for authors, thereby promoting greater inclusivity and accessibility in scholarly communication.
Beyond financial transparency, PLOS remains dedicated to advancing its mission of making scholarly communication more open, equitable, and fair. The organization's efforts extend beyond mere financial allocations, encompassing initiatives such as publishing ethics advocacy, career-building resources for researchers, and collaboration on Open Science best practices.
As a non-profit organization, PLOS continues to collaborate with researchers and stakeholders to drive positive change in scholarly communication. Its annual financial overview page offers further insight into strategic initiatives and operational activities, reaffirming its commitment to accountability and transparency.
