Boston Library Consortium spearheads Path to Open initiative for open access university press monographs -

The Boston Library Consortium (BLC), a collaborative network of libraries in the northeastern United States renowned for sharing knowledge and resources at scale, has thrown its weight behind the Path to Open initiative. This innovative pilot program, developed in conjunction with JSTOR and the academic community, aims to pave a sustainable path for the open access publication of ground-breaking scholarly books, enriching millions of readers with diverse perspectives and cutting-edge research.

In a landmark move, eight esteemed libraries within the BLC fold have embraced the Path to Open initiative, signaling a resolute commitment to fostering accessibility and inclusivity within the academic sphere. Notable participants include Boston Public Library, a trailblazer as the first public library to join the initiative, along with esteemed institutions such as Brandeis University, Trinity College, Tufts University, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, University of New Hampshire, Wellesley College, and Wesleyan University. Collectively, these libraries cater to the intellectual pursuits of over 50,000 students and faculty members, while Boston Public Library alone serves a staggering 6 million patrons.

Under the Path to Open framework, patrons of participating libraries gain immediate access to a wealth of scholarly content as it is published on JSTOR, a leading digital library platform. Crucially, every book made available through Path to Open transitions to open access three years after its initial publication, ensuring broad dissemination and unrestricted access to cutting-edge research.

At its core, Path to Open embodies a spirit of community-wide collaboration, uniting libraries, university presses, and authors in a shared mission to establish a sustainable funding model for open access publishing. By championing equity of access and amplifying the reach of scholarly research, Path to Open endeavors to democratize knowledge and empower underserved researchers worldwide.

As the Path to Open initiative gains momentum, stakeholders remain steadfast in their commitment to advancing accessibility, diversity, and excellence in scholarly publishing, propelling the academic community towards a future defined by inclusivity and collaboration.
