New Springer Nature Group Sustainability report reveals strong progress towards carbon reduction goals and increased workforce engagement in sustainability initiatives -

Springer Nature Group, a leading global publisher renowned for brands like Nature and Scientific American, unveiled its latest annual Sustainable Business Report today, titled "Open for Progress". The report showcases the company's comprehensive environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance data, highlighting significant strides in carbon reduction and diversity initiatives while revealing a notable surge in employee engagement towards sustainability efforts.

Key highlights from the report include:

1. Workforce Engagement: Approximately 24% of Springer Nature's global workforce, encompassing around 2,250 individuals, are actively involved in the company's sustainability journey. This engagement manifests through participation in employee networks dedicated to various sustainability topics such as diversity, advocacy, and reducing carbon emissions in office spaces. Moreover, colleagues volunteer across 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) working groups, contributing to projects aimed at advancing these global goals.

2. Gender Representation: The report underscores a positive trend in gender representation within leadership roles, with women now constituting 44% of the global leadership cohort. This marks a notable increase of 5 percentage points since 2018, aligning with the company's gender representation goals. Furthermore, the Management Board now boasts a balanced gender split of 50/50.

3. Carbon Reduction Targets: Springer Nature Group has achieved validation of its science-based carbon reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets include a 54.6% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions, a 32.5% reduction in scope 3 emissions by 2032, and a remarkable 90% reduction across all scopes, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. Noteworthy progress has been made, with 99% of the company's electricity now sourced from zero-carbon sources.

4. Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals: Since 2015, Springer Nature has published nearly one million pieces of research related to the SDGs, totaling 940,000. A significant portion (54%) of this SDG-related content is freely accessible, supporting global efforts to advance these critical goals.
