In a significant move towards advancing open access publishing, NERL (NorthEAST Research Libraries), a consortium representing some of America's premier research institutions, has entered into a new three-year open publishing agreement with Springer Nature, a global leader in research publishing. This landmark agreement reinforces NERL's commitment to fostering transparency, sustainability, equity, reproducibility, and flexibility in scholarly communication while aligning with Springer Nature's dedication to open access publishing.
The agreement grants seven member institutions within the NERL consortium read access to the entire corpus of Springer journals. Additionally, eligible authors from these institutions will have the opportunity to publish open access, with fees covered, in hybrid journals across the extensive Springer portfolio.
Scott Warren, Syracuse University Libraries' Senior Associate Dean for Research Excellence and co-chair of the NERL negotiation team, expressed enthusiasm about the agreement, highlighting its potential to catalyze groundbreaking scholarship. "Enabling authors from this select group of seven research universities to publish their groundbreaking scholarship openly will have an immediate impact," said Warren, underscoring the significance of the partnership between NERL and Springer Nature.
As NERL and Springer Nature embark on this transformative journey, the agreement stands as a testament to their shared commitment to advancing open access publishing and ensuring broader access to scholarly knowledge.
