Libraries’ read and publish agreement with Springer facilitates greater open access for researchers -

Syracuse University Libraries have recently inked their 12th ‘read and publish’ open access agreement, this time with esteemed academic publisher Springer, marking a significant stride in expanding the accessibility of scholarly contributions for researchers. This agreement empowers all University-affiliated authors to publish their work open access in Springer’s extensive array of more than 2,000 hybrid journals, at zero cost to them.

The essence of open access lies in its democratic ethos, allowing unrestricted access to scholarly works, free from the shackles of copyright and licensing limitations. ‘Read and publish’ agreements are pivotal in this endeavor, granting University-affiliated authors the opportunity to seamlessly make their work openly accessible when published in journals under the purview of these organizations, without incurring any financial burden.

Springer, being one of the leading publication platforms, holds immense significance for Syracuse University’s authors. Leveraging on the robust publication history of University authors in Springer titles, Syracuse University Libraries anticipate that this latest three-year agreement will wield a far-reaching impact. Encompassing a wide spectrum of Springer imprints, including Palgrave Macmillan journals, Adis Journals, and academic journals, this agreement, however, excludes gold open-access titles and nature-branded journal titles.

The negotiation for this agreement was facilitated through the NorthEAST Research Libraries consortium (NERL) for seven NERL member institutions. Scott Warren, the Libraries’ senior associate dean for research excellence, played a pivotal role in co-chairing the NERL negotiation team. Further details regarding the NERL and Springer open publishing agreement can be accessed on the Center for Research Libraries’ website.

For those seeking additional information, including instructions on how authors can avail themselves of these agreements, a comprehensive resource guide, the Transformative Agreements and APC Coverage Research Guide, is readily available.

This collaborative endeavor between Syracuse University Libraries and Springer marks a significant step forward in fostering a more inclusive and accessible landscape for scholarly research, amplifying the dissemination of knowledge for the betterment of academia and society at large.
