The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) has announced the return of its annual flagship event, the ALPSP Annual Conference & Awards. This year, the conference will be held in a hybrid format, taking place at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate, UK, and streamed online from September 11-13, 2024.
Marking the second year of a hybrid format, the conference promises to foster connections within the scholarly community, bringing together both in-person and virtual attendees.
Jake Okechukwu Effoduh, Assistant Professor at Lincoln Alexander School of Law, Toronto Metropolitan University, will be the 2024 keynote speaker. Professor Effoduh's address, titled "Scholarly Publishing in the Era of Open Access and Generative AI," will kick off the conference on September 11th.
The program boasts a line-up of insightful sessions presented by industry experts, covering critical topics such as:
• Strategies for smaller publishers to thrive in the evolving landscape

• Demonstrating the value of Open Access books
• Preparing for the rise of high-quality submissions from India
• Reimagining research communication through "deconstructed journals"

Beyond the engaging sessions and esteemed speakers, a vibrant social calendar awaits attendees. Networking opportunities, relaxation spaces, and fun activities will provide ample opportunities for connection and enjoyment.
A unique highlight of this year's conference is the introduction of "Scholarly Communication – The Eras Tour: A Time Travel Musical." This Wednesday evening event will follow a college student's journey back to 2024 to meet their publisher ancestor. With the help of a friendly librarian, they embark on a quest to understand the history of scholarly publishing.
The conference culminates on September 12th, with a social evening featuring a drinks reception, a celebratory conference dinner, and the highly anticipated awards presentation, complete with a quiz to test attendees' knowledge.
The ALPSP Annual Conference & Awards serves as a valuable platform for knowledge sharing, fostering discussions on the current state and future of scholarly publishing. Industry professionals can engage in open dialogue, learn about new initiatives, and address the challenges and opportunities shaping the field.
