CARL and CFLA release best practices code for crown-published works copyright -

The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) has announced the release of "Navigating Copyright for Crown-Published Works: A Code of Best Practices for Libraries." This document, available on both the CARL and Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA) websites, is accompanied by a concise summary.

Developed by a community-based writing team in collaboration with federal government employees, legal experts, and peer reviewers, this Crown copyright code offers libraries a comprehensive legal and practical guide for fair dealing in the stewardship of government publications in Canada.

While the Code does not serve as legal advice, it provides a legally defensible framework for applying the fair dealing exception when copying, preserving, and sharing government publications. It outlines relevant sections of the Canadian Copyright Act, significant case law, and includes case studies showcasing related projects by academic libraries.
