In a significant development for the research community, Get Full Text Research (GetFTR) has announced the expansion of its services for open-access publishers. This initiative aims to address the challenges researchers face in identifying open-access content within their discovery tools, ensuring they do not miss out on valuable articles.
GetFTR employs multiple sources to verify user entitlements and has integrated all open-access content registered at Crossref. This integration allows open-access publishers to benefit from increased discoverability, as their content is clearly marked as open access at the point of discovery. Researchers can access the most up-to-date and authoritative version of the content in just one click directly from their discovery tool.
The GetFTR indicator, which signifies access to open-access content, is visible in various research and discovery tools integrated with GetFTR, such as ReadCube, APA PsycInfo, Dimensions, and SciFinder. Additionally, users of the GetFTR Browser Extension will see this indicator on popular platforms like PubMed, Google Scholar, Google, Web of Science, and Scopus, as well as library discovery services and more.
GetFTR has also introduced a retraction and errata enhancement to its core entitlement checking service for publishers. This feature flags any updates to content at the point of discovery, ensuring researchers are aware of retractions or corrections before accessing the material. This enhancement includes open access content and extends to all publishers, regardless of their participation in GetFTR. Researchers using the GetFTR Browser Extension will automatically see this information, and participating discovery services can display retraction and update buttons next to the entitlements indicator.
Open access publishers do not need to take any action to benefit from these enhancements, and GetFTR is in the process of reaching out directly to inform them of these benefits.
One of the significant advantages of GetFTR for all publishers is ensuring that researchers are directed to the latest version of the content on the publisher’s platform. This feature is particularly crucial for open access publishers, as their content often proliferates across the web, making it challenging to maintain consistent versions. While many publishers maintain up-to-date errata and retraction information on their own sites, GetFTR’s retraction and errata enhancement enables discovery tools to flag any updates to the published article at the point of discovery, ensuring researchers have access to the most accurate information even before they read the article.
With these expansions, GetFTR continues to enhance the research experience, making it easier for scholars to find, access, and trust the academic content they need.
