OpenAIRE showcases open science innovations at the 53rd Annual LIBER Conference -

The 53rd Annual LIBER Conference, hosted by the Cyprus University of Technology from July 3-5, 2024, saw the gathering of up to 400 librarians and research professionals from across Europe and beyond. The event fostered a vibrant exchange of ideas and innovations in the realm of open science and research libraries. OpenAIRE participated as exhibitors, seizing the opportunity to engage with numerous individuals and gather a wealth of fresh perspectives.

OpenAIRE's presence at the LIBER Conference was marked by fruitful interactions with attendees, including research professionals, librarians, and policymakers. The lively discussions at the OpenAIRE booth underscored a shared commitment to advancing open science and highlighted the diverse needs and challenges faced by research institutions today. These interactions provided invaluable insights to support the research communities.

Giulia Malaguarnera, Outreach and Engagement Officer at OpenAIRE, introduced the organization and its pivotal role in promoting open science. She outlined OpenAIRE's strategic priorities for 2023-2025, emphasizing a commitment to advancing open science and a mission to drive scholarly communication towards openness and transparency.

Giulia's presentation provided an in-depth perspective on the full cycle from publishing to assessment. She demonstrated how data collection from various sources, such as open access journals and repositories, facilitates the creation of bibliometrics, open science monitoring services, and the discovery of various types of scholarly works. The presentation highlighted the pivotal role of the OpenAIRE Graph in these processes.

During her presentation, Giulia emphasized the key characteristics of the OpenAIRE Graph and its integration into other services. Specifically, in the OpenAIRE EXPLORE service, the Graph enables users to efficiently navigate and search through extensive scholarly data. The Graph is used for research evaluation, incorporating metrics and indicators that emphasize openness, transparency, and access to information beyond publications, such as data and software.

The Graph is also used for open science monitoring by maintaining data related to monitoring Open Access and Open Science policies. It is currently used in various services, such as the Open Science Observatory, the EOSC Observatory, the Irish National OA Monitor, and the OpenAIRE MONITOR. The OpenAIRE MONITOR service provides analysis and statistics from the OpenAIRE Graph, curated by researchers and developers. It showcases dashboards with dynamic visualizations of open science activities, research outputs, and performance, including research impact, funding, and collaboration indicators on demand. Giulia shared insights from ongoing project GraspOS and updates, demonstrating how they contribute to OpenAIRE's broader goal of facilitating innovative ways to communicate and monitor research.

The presentation concluded by highlighting the invaluable opportunities for synergy with librarians. By collaborating closely with librarians, researchers and institutions can enhance the dissemination and accessibility of scientific knowledge, promoting open science.

OpenAIRE's participation at the LIBER Conference reinforced its commitment to fostering a vibrant open science ecosystem, underscoring the importance of collaboration and innovation in advancing research and scholarly communication.
