The Big Ten Academic Alliance's Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Group has announced the formation of the Big Ten Academic Alliance Leadership Institute, bringing together its celebrated leadership programs under a unified banner. Renowned for its excellence in higher education leadership development, the Institute will continue to deliver skills-based and culturally competent training, building on the legacy of its well-regarded Academic Leadership Program (ALP), Department Executive Officers Program (DEO), and Deans Leadership Program (DLP).
The Big Ten Academic Alliance Leadership Institute leverages the extensive expertise of the Alliance universities to offer comprehensive training across various core areas of higher education. It serves both emerging leaders in the early stages of their academic administration careers and more seasoned administrators in roles such as department executives or deans.
The impact of the Institute is evident in the current leadership of the Alliance universities. Among the presidents, provosts, deans of liberal arts and sciences colleges, graduate colleges, and vice provosts for faculty affairs across the 14 member universities, 50% are past or present ALP or DLP Fellows. Additionally, 71% of the sitting graduate deans and nearly 60% of the deans of liberal arts and sciences colleges are alumni of these programs.
Now in its 35th year, the Academic Leadership Program (ALP) is a comprehensive year-long leadership development initiative for emerging faculty and administrative leaders. Focused on addressing the challenges of academic administration at major research universities, ALP boasts over 2,000 alumni, many of whom have ascended to top leadership positions nationwide.
Established in 1997, the Department Executive Officers Program (DEO) has supported over 1,200 department executives on their leadership journeys. Each year, DEO brings together approximately 65 new department executive officers for interactive, skills-based exercises and thought-provoking discussions about the challenges and opportunities they encounter.
The Deans Leadership Program (DLP) is the newest addition to the Institute’s offerings, designed for academic deans in their first 1-3 years in the role. DLP provides vital leadership skills and practices, addresses common questions and situations, and offers participants the chance to reflect on their personal leadership style and purpose.
Participants in the Leadership Institute programs invest significant time and effort into their leadership development. The 2023-2024 Big Ten Academic Alliance Leadership Institute Fellows are to be celebrated for their dedication and hard work. The rosters for this year’s ALP, DEO, and DLP fellows can be found on the Institute’s webpage.
