PLOS has announced the renewal of its publishing agreement with the Bibsam Consortium, marking a continued commitment to advancing open access publishing in Sweden. The two-year agreement, effective from January 1, 2024, allows researchers from over 90 affiliated Swedish institutions to publish in PLOS journals without incurring any fees.
This partnership, facilitated by the National Library of Sweden and supported by prominent research funders including the Swedish Research Council, Forte, Formas, and Vinnova, underscores Sweden's strategic investment in supporting open access publishing. The agreement aligns with the Bibsam Consortium's goal of providing equitable access to scholarly research and promotes a funding model that backs publishers exclusively offering fully open access journals.
Institutions covered under this agreement include leading universities and research centers such as the Karolinska Institute, Lund University, Uppsala University, the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, and many others. Researchers from these institutions will benefit from unlimited publishing privileges in all PLOS journals.
PLOS's innovative publishing models, including Community Action Publishing (CAP) and Global Equity, are central to this agreement. These models are designed to promote equitable and regionally appropriate ways to support open access publishing, ensuring that authors worldwide can disseminate their work without financial barriers.
The renewal of this agreement with the Bibsam Consortium is part of PLOS’s broader strategy to forge strong partnerships with global research institutions. Other recent agreements have been made with the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the University of California system, Jisc, the NorthEast Research Libraries (NERL), and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network, among others.
