The NISO Plus 2024 Global/Online conference, scheduled for September 17–18, is set to open with a keynote address by Rachel Bruce, Head of Open Science at UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). Titled "Open Research, Incentivizing Change, and Underpinning Infrastructure: A UK Perspective," Bruce's keynote will provide valuable insights into the UK's approach to fostering open research practices and the supporting infrastructure required to make these practices sustainable.
As the UK's largest public research funder, UKRI spans all disciplines and drives innovation in collaboration with industry. Rachel Bruce leads the policies and strategies for open research across UKRI, working closely with various stakeholders, including government bodies, universities, and research organizations. Her efforts aim to support the transition to open, transparent, and impactful research on both a national and international scale.
With over 25 years of experience in digital infrastructure and scholarly communications, Rachel brings a wealth of expertise to the conference. She currently represents the UK on the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Steering Board and serves on both the DORA Steering Committee and the G7 Open Science working group. Her extensive background in information science, research, and education policy, combined with her experience in integrating policy, practice, and digital infrastructure, positions her as a leading voice in the global open research movement.
Rachel’s keynote aligns with the goals of the NISO Plus Global/Online conference, which aims to unite speakers and participants from around the world to share diverse perspectives on critical issues affecting the global information community. In addition to Rachel's address, the conference will conclude with a keynote by Ginny Barbour, an open research advocate, Editor in Chief of the Medical Journal of Australia, and Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology. The program also includes sessions on open research and open research infrastructure, featuring speakers from countries including Kenya, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates.
