New Clarivate report reveals challenges and trends shaping IP operations -

Clarivate Plc, a leading global provider of transformative intelligence, has released a comprehensive survey-based report titled Excellence in IP Operations, offering valuable insights and best practices for optimizing intellectual property (IP) operations. The report sheds light on the current challenges and opportunities faced by IP departments, focusing on strategy alignment, resource allocation, technology enablement, and artificial intelligence (AI) adoption.

Conducted over a 10-week period, the report is based on responses from 184 IP professionals across corporations and law firms, including both clients and non-clients of Clarivate. The data gathered provides critical insights and benchmarks, assisting IP departments in achieving operational excellence.

Key Findings:

Alignment of KPIs with Business Goals: The report emphasizes the importance of aligning key performance indicators (KPIs) with business strategies. Among corporate respondents, 65% who understood their department's KPIs reported alignment with overall business strategies, a figure that rose to 70% among law firm respondents. This highlights that established and well-communicated KPIs are crucial for success.

Significance of Process Management: Organizations that maintain well-managed operational processes not only experience better strategic alignment but also utilize their staff more efficiently. While expanding an employee's responsibilities can enhance skill diversity, it can also compromise work quality and productivity. Achieving the right balance is essential for maintaining employee satisfaction and supporting organizational growth.

AI Adoption as a Path to Excellence: Despite growing interest in AI technology, particularly for complex IP workflows, actual deployment remains limited. The report found that IP teams lagging in AI implementation faced greater inefficiencies. Specifically, 83% of respondents who spent more than half their time on tasks unrelated to their primary roles reported not using AI in their IP departments.

Technology Enablement for Enhanced Efficiency: Satisfaction with technological infrastructure correlates closely with clearly defined roles and integrated IP workflows. Notably, 64% of respondents who expressed low satisfaction with their technology setup spent over 50% of their time on unrelated tasks. In contrast, those who felt well-equipped with the right tools spent significantly less time on extraneous activities.

Resource Constraints Driving Innovation: With limited budgets, IP teams are compelled to adopt innovative approaches to complete their daily tasks more effectively. The report suggests that exploring new AI-based features and functionalities within existing software could be a promising avenue for enhancing efficiency.

The Excellence in IP Operations report from Clarivate underscores the need for IP professionals to align strategies, leverage technology, and embrace AI to overcome challenges and capitalize on opportunities in the evolving landscape of intellectual property operations. By implementing the report's recommendations, organizations can improve their operational excellence and better navigate the complexities of IP management.
